Special counsel proposes January 2024 trial date in Trump election case.
A person close to Trump said the special counsel Jack Smith's written filing set an aggressive pace that Trump's lawyers will likely try to delay.
The eight-page filing to US district court judge Tanya Chutkan, who will hear arguments from both parties about the protective order, argued it gave Trump enough time to defend.
Trump denied conspiring to defraud the US, obstructing an official action, and conspiring against rights in Washington federal district court.
It also argued that Trump's lawyers were improper to portray the Speedy Trial Act, which expedites criminal trials, as favouring the defendant and allowing Trump to wait.
