STORYLINE:
One of the most iconic events of Holy Week in the Spanish city of Malaga is the transfer of a statue of Jesus Christ by the Spanish Legion, an elite unit of the country's armed forces.
The ceremony begins on Maundy Thursday with the legionaries arriving at the port of Malaga, followed by the procession of Christ of the Good Death, their patron saint.
Despite the wet and windy weather in Spain, people still attended the event in large numbers.
This year for the first time, Emeritus Queen Sofia of Spain, accompaniment by her sister Irene of Greece, presided over the procession.
The statue is also known as Christ of Mena, named after the creator of a sculpture believed to have been carved in 1660, on which the current statue is based.
As they carried the statue, the troops sang "El novio de la Muerte" (The Bridegroom of Death), a song that often moves crowds to tears and applause.
Malaga's Holy Week celebrations, which begin on Palm Sunday and end on Easter Sunday, attract both national and international tourists to the city.
International film star Antonio Banderas, who is from Malaga, was one of the more famous guests to take in the sights and sounds on Maundy Thursday this year.
