Conor Benn vs Regis Prograis and Oleksandr Usyk vs Rico Verhoeven have both been officially announced — but what do these fights actually prove? In this breakdown, I examine why these matchups feel fundamentally meaningless for very different reasons.
Benn has signed a reported multi-million dollar deal and once again steps in with a smaller man moving up in weight. Regis Prograis is a former world champion at 140 lbs, but this fight does little to answer the key question at welterweight: how good is Conor Benn against a natural, elite 147 contender?
On the other side, Oleksandr Usyk has already achieved everything — undisputed at cruiserweight and heavyweight. If he wants a spectacle fight with Rico Verhoeven, that’s his right. But if a WBC title is attached, it raises serious questions about merit, rankings and what world belts are supposed to represent.
Two mismatches. Two completely different problems. And neither fight moves boxing forward.
