This video gives some really good advice on how to go about screenwriting. In a nutshell, go into screenwriting for the right reasons. Don't write screenplays for money or fame. Write because you love the movies and you love writing screenplays.

Develop your talents and skills. This takes time. It takes time to develop your screenwriting abilities. You have to be able to move people and develop characters and make them more enriching.

A good idea well-executed is worth a lot. But a good idea without execution is worth nothing. Also, try to develop your own screenwriting voice rather than imitate and copy other people.

When writing a screenplay, be prepared to stick with it for the long haul. Stay positive. There are a limited number of great ideas, so a great story with wonderful execution will most likely see you through.

If you want to sell your screenplay, then you will need to master the art and craft of screenwriting first. The same goes if you are trying to get a screenplay agent, it's all about the quality of the screenplay.
