Jesus Christ taught us to love God and love our neighbors as ourselves, but he also challenged his disciples to love their enemies.

What does it mean to love our enemies?

There are two accounts of Jesus's command to love our enemies: Luke 6:27-36 and Matthew 5:43-48. In both cases he even gives specific ways to carry out this command.

Love your enemies:
Do good to those who hate you
Bless those who curse you
Pray for those who mistreat you or persecute you
Do not fight someone in anger
Give more to those who steal from you
Do to others as you would have them do to you

Why is this important?

Because, as Jesus goes on to say, even sinners love those who love them. The real challenge is loving someone who hates you. To love your enemy is to love like God. To love your enemy is to be merciful and perfect like the Father in heaven.

This challenges what a lot of people think about as love. Love is not about the good feelings we get when we are with someone who loves us. Love is about the conscious choice to let go of resentment or fear and give generously to others.
