The last time Nathan Asiimwe came face-to-face with AFC Wimbledon was under the famous arch of Wembley Stadium.
Our new wing-back was naturally disappointed to be on the losing side that day with Walsall, but as he explains, it was yet another eye-opener with regards to how this Dons side operates.
Indeed the 20-year-old faced us on more than one occasion and admits to being impressed with what he came up against.
“Overall it’s like a machine,” Nathan explains. “Playing against Wimbledon showed me that this is a group that is aggressive and runs hard for each other. They rarely left gaps – if one person strayed out of position there was always someone coming in to cover them. It showed real togetherness.
“When you play against a side that’s solid as a unit, it’s very hard to break them down. There’s a lot of quality in the side, a few good leaders too, which I have noticed.”
Signing for the Dons on Wednesday of this week, Nathan has had to settle quickly – however he wasn’t alone in doing so.
Fellow new signings Danilo Orsi and Antwoine Hackford joined him at the Cherry Red Records Stadium for their respective medicals and media duties before the arrivals were announced.
“It was good that I wasn’t alone on my first day,” he said. “The boys that were already here have been so welcoming to me. Of course we faced each other twice last season, so there were a few jokes flying around about those games!”
To add to this both Nathan and his teammates were given an induction day at Plough Lane, meeting staff and representatives from the Club’s various arms to give the squad an understanding of why playing for this football club is different from others.
“I found the experience fascinating. To gain an understanding of how big a role the fans play in how this club is run was interesting for me.”
As for what our supporters can expect from our newest defender – a combination of pace and defensive solidity has been mentioned in various quarters.
Nathan’s ability to speed down the flanks using both feet to his ability has certainly been eye-catching for our fans who have seen clips of his previous games – a trait that the player himself feels gives him an advantage over opponents.
“It makes things unpredictable for the opponent that’s defending against me. It adds something to my arsenal because I can play off both sides comfortably – it makes it easier for not just the Gaffer but also my teammates, because they know they can put trust in me.
“When I played against Wimbledon at Wembley, we cancelled each other out - especially in my position of wing-back,” he added. “Playing in a system which I’m very used to will make settling in here a lot easier. I want to slide in and do my thing for the team.”
A composed character, the Charlton Athletic loanee is now ready to be thrown in at the deep end, with our opening game of the Sky Bet League One season just around the corner against Luton Town.
The Hatters may be seen by many as one of the favourites to go back up – but Nathan is insistent that both he and the rest of the Wimbledon squad will mean business come 8pm tomorrow night.
“People look at Luton and think that we’re the underdogs – to us that’s okay, we’re a team that relishes challenges and that’s how this team has got where it is, so I’m excited to be part of it. We’re going to give them a good game tomorrow.”
