In this episode of our classic wooden boat restoration series, we focus on three major steps in bringing the 1939 Lyman runabout back to life. The hardtop, which was almost entirely rotten, is rebuilt with white oak and Douglas fir, sealed with multiple coats of varnish to highlight the natural wood. Every piece is carefully disassembled, finished, and reassembled—a process involving hundreds of nails and hours of patient craftsmanship.
We also cover the layout and shaping of a new rub rail. Using original 1939 pencil marks as guides, oak blanks are measured, cut, and bent to follow the boat’s unique curves. This part of the restoration shows just how precise wooden boat work must be to stay true to the original design.
