The Mahaweli Water Security Investment Program, implemented under
the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock Resources, Lands, and Irrigation,
is the largest irrigation development project being launched as the final phase of the Mahaweli Development Plan, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Sri Lanka.The 28-kilometer-long irrigation tunnel being constructed under this program in the North Central Province Cannel is considered the longest irrigation tunnel in South Asia.
