At least 18 labourers were killed after a dynamite explosion ripped through a suspected illegal rat-hole coal mine in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills. Several others are still feared trapped as rescue teams continue search operations in the remote forested area.
Police say the blast occurred during mining activity inside narrow tunnels, a hazardous method banned since 2014 due to repeated safety risks. Authorities have launched an inquiry to identify those operating the illegal mine and fix accountability.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced financial assistance for the victims’ families, while the state government has promised strict action.
