Southern's Class 455 EMUs are being retired in May 2022, they were built between 1982 and 1984 and have provided sterling service to the commuter routes of South London and Surrey since then. Often overlooked by many the Class 455/8 units have always been a pleasure for me to drive at work and travel on. However, in 2022 the leasing costs cannot be justified and they will be replaced initially by Class 377 EMUs. The Covid19 pandemic has hit the railway industry hard and savings have to be made.
The Class 455/8 units will be missed but they have done amazing, tireless and unappreciated work.
