In the early 15th century, the Indian Ocean was the highway of trade. Spices, gems, and elephants made Serendib a jewel of the seas. But one day, mighty ships appeared on the horizon—not from Arabia or Europe, but from the East… China.
Admiral Zheng He, the great mariner of China’s Ming Dynasty, led the largest naval fleet in the world. On his voyages, he sought trade, diplomacy, and tribute. In 1411, his sails reached the shores of Lanka.
But Lanka’s king, Alakeshvara of Kotte, was not willing to bow. Tension turned to hostility. Envoys were insulted. Armies marched.
The confrontation was swift. The Chinese fleet, armed and disciplined, defeated the island’s defenses. King Alakeshvara was captured and taken aboard Zheng He’s flagship.. .
Alakeshvara was carried across the seas to China. There, he stood before the Ming Emperor. Unlike later conquerors, the Chinese did not seek to rule Lanka. The king was released, but his power at home had ended.
It was a brief moment in history—when the dragon’s sails touched the island of Serendib. Not for conquest, but to remind the world that the ocean was China’s stage.
