Anurag Kashyap, the acclaimed filmmaker, has ignited a nationwide controversy with a provocative comment on social media.
In response to a user's remark stating, "Brahmins are your fathers," Kashyap replied, "I would urinate on Brahmins. Any problem?" This statement sparked widespread outrage, leading to police complaints and threats directed at Kashyap and his family. Union Minister Satish Chandra Dubey condemned the statement, demanding a public apology. A police complaint was also filed in Mumbai.
Kashyap addressed the backlash by issuing a statement clarifying his position. He expressed that while he stands by his original post, he regrets the threats his family has received. He stated, "No action or speech is worth your daughter, family, friends, and colleagues getting rape and death threats from the kingpins of sanskar." He further added, "I won't take back what I said. Abuse me all you want. My family didn't say anything. If you want an apology, here it is. Brahmins, spare the women. These values are imbibed in our scriptures, too, except for Manuwaad. Decide which Brahmin you are."
The controversy arises amidst the ongoing debate over the film "Phule," which has faced delays due to objections from certain groups. Kashyap has been vocal about the censorship issues surrounding the film, questioning the existence of casteism in India.
This incident has reignited discussions on freedom of speech, censorship, and the role of social media in public discourse.
