James Gamble Rogers, Class of1889, architect of our historic clubhouse at 50 Vanderbilt Ave., was an exact contemporary of Frank Lloyd Wright. Both were born in 1867, and both were members together of a little architects’ lunch club in Chicago in the 1890s. Legend has it that when Wright visited Yale he wanted to stay in Rogers' Harkness Tower because it would be the only place on campus from which he could not see it.
Comparing and contrasting the work, careers, and temperaments of the two celebrated architects, Patrick Pinnell will provide the historical context of the Club’s building and discuss its place in the
urban development of New York.
