In 1978, the first feature film in the Irish language, "Poitín," was released in cinemas. Following this, there were very few attempts at making any further films in the Irish-language for the remainder of the 20th century and into the early 21st century. Despite this, smaller filmmaking efforts did manage to persist during this time, in the form of short films and dubs.
This was the status quo until the late 2010s, when a new scheme was announced which would ultimately change the course of the Irish film industry.
