Welcome to Neighboring 101, a program of University of Missouri Extension. I am your host, David Burton, a community development specialist with MU Extension and creator of our Engaged Neighbor program (http://engagedneighbor.com).
Neighboring 101 is where we talk with leaders in the neighboring movement all across the United States and discover ways organizations and individuals can use the art and skill of neighboring as part of community and personal development.
Today we’re fortunate to be joined by two special guests who both bring experience and insight to our ongoing conversations about community and connection. Please help me welcome Brenna Duffy, Neighborhood Services Supervisor and Alyssa Workman, Neighborhood Programs Coordinator, both with the City of Overland Park, Kansas.
Brenna and Alyssa are both passionate advocates for building stronger, more inclusive communities, and they bring a thoughtful, people-centered approach to her work. In 2024 these two led a compelling presentation at the Neighborhoods USA (NUSA) Conference in Lubbock, Texas, where they explored how the principles of "The Art of Gathering" can transform not just meetings and events—but also our everyday interactions and sense of belonging.
Today, they will guide us through a discussion based on that same book, sharing both the key ideas from the author, Priya Parker, and her own experiences applying them in a local government and neighborhood context.
