Research paper details a novel, one-step solution combustion synthesis (SCS) method for creating nano-structured iridium oxide (IrO2) catalysts for use in PEM water electrolysis. Researchers addressed the high cost of traditional anode catalysts by developing a cost-effective process that produces highly dispersible materials with a high active surface area. A standout discovery involved incorporating amorphous alumina into the catalyst structure, which significantly enhanced performance while reducing precious metal content by 45 wt%. This alumina-supported version achieved electrolysis efficiency comparable to state-of-the-art commercial standards. Morphological analysis revealed unique needle-shaped nanoparticles that improve connectivity and stability within the catalyst ink. Ultimately, the study demonstrates that this simplified synthesis approach can facilitate larger-scale, sustainable hydrogen production.
