Artis Wodehouse foot-pumps (i.e., pianolizes) James P. Johnson's original 1920 QRS piano roll, Roumania foxtrot on a restored antique upright player piano.
James P. Johnson's Roumania piano roll rendition is one of his most masterful piano roll performances. It features a perfect union of piano roll technology and the specific artistry of this great American stride pianist and composer, James P. Johnson. Johnson's stride piano rendition utilizes the full range of the modern piano, from deep bass notes, to brilliant treble filagree and at the core, mid-range sustained notes uniting the whole.
Words and music to the tune are by Clarence Williams, Dave Peyton and Spencer Williams.
Wodehouse plays on a 60-inch tall 1910 upright built by Bush & Lane of Chicago and restored by Paul Manganaro. Bush & Lane player pianos are noted for a piano roll playback mechanism that allows the person foot-pumping (i.e., the pianolist) to add in real time many expressive small-scale temporal and dynamic inflections.
