Plumbing veteran can't solder? That's right folks, I messed up. I couldn't solder this one. In this video you will hear my commentary on WHY I couldn't get this one soldered. I made 2 mistakes that you need to avoid. These are low key mistakes that you really wouldn't know to avoid unless you've soldered 100+ pieces of copper. Most videos will tell you to not over heat, dont use too much flux, don't burn the solder, etc. Those are rookie mistakes. The mistakes I made are veteran mistakes that you sometimes forget about.
1. You got to keep the fittings and pipe CLEAN when soldering.
My mistake was I put a slip coupling with solder onto the pipe coming out of the ground and a portion of the pipe that I did not clean came in contact with the clean fitting and the solder which prevented the solder from taking into the coupling on the bottom. I should have sand papered the pipe coming out of the ground further down OR I should have slid the slip coupling onto the new, clean piece of copper.
2. Make sure your flux isn't super dirty.
My flux sits in my soldering bag/kit and I try to keep it covered but you will eventually get dirt and stuff in it as time goes by. My flux is almost gone and its super dirty. Most plumbers cut a hole in the top of the flux tub and leave their acid brush in it. I am actually going to stop doing this. The tub of flux is prone to getting a lot of debris in it when you do this.
If I had soldered the fittings again I would have tinned the pipe coming out of the ground by putting flux on the pipe, heating it and drizzling solder over it then sanding the heck out of it. A tinned pipe takes solder better in my opinion. I had no time for that so I pressed it!
