STORYLINE:
AP Television on Saturday shot footage of Palestinians trying to cross from Gaza into Israel via the Erez crossing in an attempt to get to the West Bank.
It was not clear whether the Palestinians seen on the footage made it into Israel or whether they were stopped by the army.
Also on Saturday hundreds of Palestinians began looting Palestinian police positions at the crossing, causing Israeli forces to fire warning shots, witnesses said.
Some of those trying to leave through the crossing carried large suitcases.
One young man shouted "bye, bye, Gaza," and waved as he walked through the covered walkway that leads to the Israeli side.
Israeli officials said it allowed some Palestinians to cross because of humanitarian considerations, but that the crossing was later closed.
Since the fall of Gaza to Hamas, Israel has permitted some senior Fatah officials to pass through Erez.
About 50 senior Fatah leaders and security officers from Gaza reached the West Bank city of Ramallah on Saturday.
According to reports hundreds of people looted police positions on the Palestinian side of Erez, and at one point Israeli troops fired in the air to
keep the crowd at bay.
The looters walked off with furniture and scrap metal.
The Israeli army said it was checking the reports of shooting at the crossing, which has largely been closed for the past week.
