The 3rd June Plan, also known as the Mountbatten Plan, was the final blueprint laid out by the British Government for the partition of India. Announced on 3rd June 1947, this plan came after the tragic events of Direct Action Day and mounting communal violence, which convinced the Indian National Congress and All India Muslim League that partition was the only solution to end Hindu-Muslim conflict.
Under this plan:
India would be partitioned into two sovereign states — India and Pakistan.
Provinces like Punjab and Bengal were to be divided based on religious majority, with the Boundary Commission set up to draw borders.
Sindh Assembly was given the right to decide whether to join Pakistan.
Referendums would be held in NWFP and Sylhet (in Assam) to decide their future.
Division of assets like the army, treasury, and government offices between India and Pakistan, with a ratio of 17:5.
