A medium bomber aircraft developed by the American aviation company North American Aviation during World War II. It was named in honor of Major General William "Billy" Mitchell, a pioneer of U.S. military aviation.
The B-25 first flew in August 1940 and entered service with the U.S. Army Air Corps in early 1941. It quickly became one of the most widely used aircraft of the war, with over 9,800 produced by the end of the conflict. The B-25 was used in a variety of roles, including bombing, reconnaissance, and strafing enemy targets.
One of the most famous missions carried out by the B-25 was the Doolittle Raid in April 1942, where 16 B-25s were launched from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet to bomb Tokyo and other Japanese cities. The raid was a significant morale boost for the American people and demonstrated the vulnerability of the Japanese homeland.
The B-25 was powered by two Wright R-2600 radial engines, which gave it a top speed of around 275 mph (440 km/h) and a range of up to 1,300 miles (2,100 km). It had a crew of six, including a pilot, co-pilot, navigator/bombardier, top turret gunner, tail gunner, and waist gunner.
After the war, the B-25 continued to serve in various roles, including as a transport and trainer aircraft. Today, a number of B-25s remain in airworthy condition and are flown at air shows and other events around the world.
