A FLIGHT AT THE OLD HARTWOOD ASYLUM WHAT A PLACE.
Hartwood Asylum, originally known as Lanark District Asylum, was a psychiatric hospital in Hartwood, Scotland, opened in 1895. Designed to accommodate 500 patients, it was a self-sustaining facility with its own farm, gardens, railway, power plant, and cemetery. Dr. Archibald Campbell Clark, its first medical superintendent, emphasized humane treatment, but the hospital also became known for controversial procedures like electroconvulsive therapy and lobotomies.
By the 1950s, Hartwood was the largest asylum in Europe, housing over 2,500 patients. The introduction of the Community Care Act in 1990 led to its decline, and it officially closed in 1998. The abandoned site suffered major fires in 2004 and 2016, leaving it in a state of dereliction. Despite its grim history, Hartwood remains a significant part of Scotland’s psychiatric care legacy.
