Esteemed Guests, Members of Voice of Life FM Board, Fellow Journalists, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Good afternoon. My name is Benzamin Matata, a multimedia journalist, currently practicing here at Voice of Life FM.

It is with immense gratitude and a profound sense of humility that I stand before you today, accepting the Uganda National Journalism Award 2025 in the Community Reporting Category. To be recognized by ACME, an institution I deeply respect for its unwavering commitment to journalistic excellence and media development in Uganda, is truly an honor beyond words.

When I embarked on the journey of Community Reporting, my primary aim was not accolades, but impact. It was about giving a voice to the voiceless, shedding light on the often-overlooked realities of our communities, and fostering a deeper understanding of the issues that affect the everyday lives of citizens.

Community reporting, to me, is the heartbeat of journalism. It's about getting to the ground, listening intently, observing keenly, and then meticulously weaving together narratives that resonate with truth and authenticity. It’s about recognizing that the biggest stories are not always found in the corridors of power, but often in the humble homes, the bustling markets, the quiet villages, and the resilient spirits of ordinary people. It is a demanding, often thankless, but ultimately incredibly rewarding endeavor.

This award is not just a personal triumph; it is a testament to the power of community journalism. It underscores the vital role that local stories play in shaping our national discourse and in driving positive change. It affirms that the narratives from Arua, or from every corner of this nation, are just as crucial, if not more so, in building a truly informed and engaged citizenry.

I owe a debt of gratitude to so many who made this possible.

Firstly, to the brave and resilient individuals and communities who opened their lives and shared their stories with me. Their trust is the foundation of my work, and this award is as much theirs as it is mine. I Thank them for their courage and for believing in the power of their own narratives.

To the station, my editors and colleagues at Voice of Life, thank you for your guidance, your unwavering support, and for providing the platform that allowed these stories to reach a wider audience. Your constructive criticism and belief in my vision were invaluable.

Equally to ACME, and the distinguished panel of judges, I thank them for seeing the value in community-focused journalism and for recognizing the effort that goes into it. Their commitment to nurturing high journalistic standards inspires us all.

To my family and friends, your endless encouragement, patience, and understanding gave me confidence. Thank you for being my strongest cheerleaders and for tolerating the unpredictable hours and the emotional toll that comes with this profession.

Finally, to all aspiring and practicing community reporters: keep pushing, keep digging, and keep listening. Your work matters. It is the bedrock upon which a truly democratic and accountable society is built. The stories from our communities are the mirror reflecting our nation's progress, its challenges, and its boundless potential.

As we look ahead, I am more committed than ever to continue championing the voices of our communities. This award fuels my passion and reinforces my belief in the transformative power of ethical, and impactful journalism.
