200 miles above the Arctic Circle, in Northern Norway, the UK's Surveillance and Reconnaissance Squadron (SRS) train to operate in one of the harshest environments on earth.

In this video, Colonel Al Carns — a Royal Marine Reservist who spent 24 years in the Corps and now serves as Minister for the Armed Forces — joins SRS during a demanding winter training period at Helligskogen Fjellstue.

From ice climbing and ski manoeuvre to avalanche demolition and Arctic specialist loadouts, this is where British forces develop the resilience and capability required to survive, fight and win in extreme cold weather conditions.

The High North is of increasing strategic importance. As a leading NATO ally, the United Kingdom must be able to deploy and operate in all environments — including those where temperatures plummet, daylight is limited, and the terrain itself becomes the primary adversary.

This training ensures our Armed Forces remain ready, interoperable with allies, and capable of operating wherever required.
