About the Winnemem Wintu Tribe:

After the construction of Shasta Dam in 1945, the salmon were blocked from reaching their spawning grounds, leading to their near extinction. Despite being a small tribe, the Winnemem Wintu have led campaigns, protests, and restoration efforts to bring the salmon back and protect their sacred lands.

Our Impact:
• In 2022, the tribe successfully worked with government agencies to transport salmon eggs past Shasta Dam to their ancestral spawning grounds for the first time in nearly 80 years.
• Developed an innovative nature-based incubation system to protect salmon eggs, which is currently being tested.
• Led the Run4Salmon initiative, a 300-mile annual journey tracing the salmon's path from Mt. Shasta to the Pacific Ocean, raising awareness for the species’ restoration.
