It all began on April 17, 1651, during the English Civil War. Parliamentarian forces demanded the Royalist governor of the Isles of Scilly surrender (Sir John Grenville). He called on the Dutch—England’s ally against Spain—for help. Although the Dutch never sent troops, negotiations collapsed, and nobody officially ended the conflict.
So for the next 335 years, this tiny group of islands off Cornwall and the Netherlands remained at war on paper. In reality, islanders farmed, fishermen caught mackerel, and Dutch merchants traded freely in Scillonian waters. No armies gathered. No cannons fired.
Then, in 1986, a local historian (Roy Duncan) found the forgotten declaration in dusty archives. Both governments acknowledged the mistake, and on March 17, they signed a formal peace treaty aboard a Royal Navy ship near St. Mary’s harbor. Finally, the world’s longest war came to an end.
