October 1st, 2011. Sergio “Maravilla” Martínez took on “Dazzling” Darren Barker in the 1st defenses of his WBC Diamond Middleweight & The Ring Magazine Middleweight Titles in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

At this juncture, Martínez was rated as the No. 3 P4P Fighter and the No.1 Middleweight by The Ring Magazine while the 14.5/1 betting underdog Barker was unranked by the same publication.

Prefight records; Martínez; 47(26)-2-2, Barker 23(14)-0.

Entering the bout, the undefeated 28 year old Darren who was the former Commonwealth (British Empire) Middleweight & European Middleweight Champion had no notable wins against elite competition while the seasoned Sergio had defeated the likes of Adrian Stone, Alex Bunema, Kelly Pavlik, Paul Williams & Serhiy Dzinziruk.

Overall, the challenger was the aggressor who continuously pressed the action but the champion was able to counter effectively whilst circling the ring with his vaunted footwork to win most if not every round en route to a late stoppage.

Barker was twice wobbled in round 10 but Martínez was somehow unable to finish the gutsy Londoner who refused to go down from the enormous punishment.

Despite being badly hurt, Darren was able to return fire in round 11 but ultimately hit the canvas as he was unable to weather Sergio’s storms after storms of shots and was counted out by referee Eddie Cotton.

Although he was a heavy underdog, Darren Barker definitely dazzled the crowd with his unflinching determination and certainly put up a tremendous effort against the skilled Argentinian veteran.
