PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY (1792-1822)*
Born in Percy Bysshe Shelley in Horsham, Sussex, England. His father was an M.P.; Shelley was the heir to estates left by grandfather. Educated at Syon House Academy, Eton College and Oxford University (1810) (expelled). Married (eloped) Harriet Westbrook in 1811 against the wishes of both sets of parents who cut the couple off financially. The newly weds borrowed money and became politically active with a group of like-minded friends. The terms of his grandfather's will forced Shelley's father to grant an annual income to his son in 1815. The couple travelled widely, and erratically, in pursuit of their political goals. Shelley eloped to Europe with Mary Godwin in 1814; they married in 1816. The newly-wed's life at this stage was chaotic, they mixed in a bohemian circle which followed few of the conventional norms of the day, or any day. Shelley was not widely read during his lifetime; his reputation owes a great deal to the work of his widow in editing and cataloging his writing. Died in 1822 in Sardinia, Italy.
