The Visakhapatnam Steel Plant faces dire challenges as a severe shortage of coking coal and mounting pending power bills threaten its operations. With pending bills exceeding Rs. 70 crore, the Eastern Power Distribution Corporation Limited (EPDCL) has issued a stern warning, threatening to cut off power supply if dues are not settled promptly.

The coking coal shortage, exacerbated by disruptions at Adani Gangavaram Port Limited (AGPL) due to worker agitation, has severely hampered production, posing a significant hurdle for the steel plant. Despite these obstacles, the plant's management remains resolute, implementing a comprehensive strategy to mitigate disruptions and ensure operational continuity.

Amidst allegations from CITU that the plant's CMD is responsible for creating the coal shortage, tensions escalate as production drops by around 80%. CITU's state secretary, Ch. Narasinga Rao, points out that ample coal reserves are available at Gangavaram Port, suggesting negligence on the part of plant management.

In response, the plant management emphasizes efforts to secure uninterrupted coal supply and restore operations at AGPL. Seeking assistance from the district administration, the plant aims to swiftly resolve the crisis by exploring alternative measures, including diverting shipments to Vizag Port Authority and initiating emergency procurement through a global tender.

As the steel plant grapples with these critical challenges, swift action and cooperation from all stakeholders are imperative to safeguard its operations and uphold its vital role in the region's economy.
