Alone on the Katmai Coast: A Sow and Two Cubs
From cubs of the year to the solitary giants of the coast, there is no place on Earth quite like Katmai. It’s a land of unpredictable weather, rugged terrain, and the highest concentration of brown bears in the world.
I spent most of this past summer alone in the field, and this video is a look back at a particularly special moment I captured. I was out on the river and mud flats of Kukak Bay observing a sow and her two cubs. In this footage, you'll see a mother teaching her young to hunt for salmon in the coastal tides—a masterclass in survival.
A Close Encounter in the Rain: During this shoot, the rain was coming down hard, making it difficult for the sow to identify me. You’ll see the moment she decides to climb the bank to investigate my position. To ensure she identified me as a human, I stood tall and gave her a firm command to return to her cubs. I don’t think she "understood" my words; rather, she heard my voice and tone, and that was enough for her to recognize me and keep her distance.
I did not feel threatened at any point, as she showed no signs of aggression—she was simply curious and trying to identify her surroundings. However, it remains a powerful reminder of the respect and clear boundaries required when working as a guide in bear country, especially when operating solo.
*SCENE EXPLANATION: A Close Encounter in the Rain
During this shoot, the rain was coming down hard, significantly dampening the sow's ability to scent or see me clearly. Being alone added a layer of complexity to the encounter; unlike the larger groups I typically lead, a solo person has a much smaller physical profile and a quieter presence, making it harder for a bear to quickly identify you as human.
You’ll see the moment she decides to climb the bank to investigate my position and bridge the gap of uncertainty. To ensure she recognized me, I stood tall to break my silhouette and gave her a firm command to return to her cubs. I don’t think she "understood" my words; rather, she heard the authority in my voice and tone, which was enough for her to categorize me and maintain her distance. It is a powerful reminder of the respect, clear communication, and boundaries required when working as a guide in bear country—especially when you are operating on your own.
This is the Katmai Coast exactly as I see it: raw, quiet, and unfiltered.
