ಕ್ರಿ.ಶ. 14ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಭಾರತವು ಅನೇಕ ಆಕ್ರಮಣಗಳಿಂದ ಸಂಕಷ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ, ಹೊಯ್ಸಳ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಸೂರ್ಯ ಅಸ್ತಮಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ, ಶೃಂಗೇರಿ ಶಾರದಾ ಪೀಠದ 11ನೇ ಮತ್ತು 12ನೇ ಉಭಯ ಜಗದ್ಗುರುಗಳು ಹರಿಹರ ಮತ್ತು ಬುಕ್ಕರಾಯರನ್ನು ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶನ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಆ ದಿವ್ಯ ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶನದ ಫಲವಾಗಿ “ಕರ್ಣಾಟ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯ” ಎಂಬ ಹೊಸ ಹಿಂದೂ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಉದಯವಾಯಿತು. ಅವರ ರಾಜಧಾನಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾನಗರವು ಶೃಂಗೇರಿ ಪೀಠದ 10ನೇ ಜಗದ್ಗುರುವಿನ ಸ್ಮರಣಾರ್ಥವಾಗಿ ಹೆಸರು ಪಡೆದಿತು. ಕರ್ಣಾಟ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಟರ ಭಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಶೃಂಗೇರಿ ಮಠಕ್ಕೆ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಸ್ಥಾನಮಾನ ದೊರೆತು, “ಶೃಂಗೇರಿ ಧರ್ಮಸಂಸ್ಥಾನ” ಎಂಬ ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಪ್ರದೇಶ ರೂಪುಗೊಂಡಿತು. ಅಭೇದ್ಯ ಗುರುಪರಂಪರೆಯನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ ಜಗದ್ಗುರುಗಳು 14ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದಿಂದ ಭಾರತದ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯಾನಂತರ ಜಾಗೀರು ರದ್ದು ಆಗುವವರೆಗೂ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಭಾರತದ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಮತ್ತು ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಗಳ ಕೇಂದ್ರಬಿಂದುವಾಗಿದ್ದರು.

From sacred times of Vibhandaka Maharshi and Rishyasrunga Maharshi, through the divine advent of Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya, and continuing up to the present day, Sringeri stands as a beacon of rich cultural heritage and timeless Sanatana Dharma. It was here that Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya established his first Amnaya Peetha – the revered Dakshinamnaya Sri Sharada Peetham – with the noble mission of reviving and protecting Sanatana Dharma.

During the turbulent 14th century, when South India faced waves of invasions and the Hoysala Empire was nearing its decline, the 11th and 12th Ubaya Jagadgurus of Sringeri Sharada Peetham played a pivotal role in guiding Harihara I and Bukka I. Their spiritual and strategic guidance led to the rise of a new Hindu power in South India — the mighty Karnata Empire, which ruled from its capital, Vidyanagara, named in honour of the 10th Jagadguru of Sringeri.

The devotion of the Karnata Emperors to Sringeri Matha led to the emergence of an independent spiritual region — Sringeri Dharmasamsthana. With an unbroken Guru Parampara, the Jagadgurus remained at the heart of South Indian political and spiritual life from the 14th century until the abolition of the Jahgir after India’s Independence.
