Green man mask and garland or headdress workshop
with Sarah Hyams

Time needed: 20 mins-2 hours ( 20 mins basic, 2 hours more elaborate)
Materials needed:
• scissors and string
• Foraged plants from nature
For the base:
• long grasses
• ferns
• ivy and climbing plants
For decoration:
• any natural objects you like:
• flowers
• feathers
• seaweed
• ferns upright as feathers,
• berries

Look at the natural body decoration of the Omo tribe in eastern Africa (borders of Ethiopia, Kenya

Points to consider:
-Observe how sculptural these works are
-the use of unusual plants decorating all of the body
-How might you be able to create something like this?
-Will your creation just be on the face or cover other parts of the body?
-are there other cultures that use nature as a way of decorating the body?

Last tip:
If you’d like to have an even fuller experience, this could be an activity that’s a part of a nature
walk and done in nature.

create a dance, parade or skit, using your natures costumes!
