Crimes Against Humanity Convention at the UNGA Sixth Committee: The Potential and Relevance for Asia

Описание: From 10 – 14 April 2023, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) Sixth Committee discussed the Draft Articles prepared and finalised by the International Law Commission (ILC) in 2019 on the ‘Prevention and Punishment of Crimes Against Humanity’. This marked the first of the two sessions envisaged by the November 2022 resolution which was co-sponsored by 86 States and established a two-year time frame for the discussion on the ILC Draft Articles and to recommend elaboration of a convention by the General Assembly or by an international conference of plenipotentiaries.

Against this backdrop, the Asia Justice Coalition and the International Commission of Jurists webinar aims to discuss the prospects and relevance of the proposed global convention on crimes against humanity for the Asia-Pacific region. The webinar will provide a platform to carve out the value and contribution of the Global South, in particular, Asia to promote and ensure peace and stability. Drawing and reflecting on the statements delivered by States in the Sixth Committee, the discussion will also explore the complementarity of the CAH Convention with the Rome Statute (ICC) and the proposed Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty.
