Apply Newton's second and third laws and to take a look at the situation of a cannon firing a cannon ball. F=ma combined with equal and opposite forces allow us solve for the final velocity of the cannon, recoil velocity, after firing a projectile forward. The force by the cannon is the same as the force on the cannon, there for the impulse on both the ball and cannon are the same but have the same sign. Applying Newton's laws we can understand and quantify the conservation of linear momentum in an explosion. In the end we will find that an explosion is really just an inelastic collision in reverse.
This problem comes up in the conservation of linear momentum in collisions which is a topic in physics courses including AP Physics 1 and AP Physics C Mechanics.
