The "Race for Rare Earths" represents the defining geopolitical and economic contest of the 21st century, driven by the global transition to a low-carbon economy. Rare earth elements (REEs) like neodymium and dysprosium are essential for producing the permanent magnets that power electric vehicles, wind turbines, and advanced defense systems. Global demand for these magnetic REEs is projected to triple by 2035.
However, the global supply chain is highly vulnerable due to extreme geographic concentration. China currently controls roughly 60% of global REE mining and over 90% of refining and magnet production. This monopoly became a crisis in 2025 when Beijing weaponized its market dominance by implementing sweeping export controls on critical REEs and extraction technologies. These restrictions triggered immediate supply shocks, forcing major Western automakers and defense contractors to halt production.
In response, Western nations have launched aggressive industrial policies to achieve mineral sovereignty. The United States introduced "Project Vault," a public-private strategic reserve backed by a $10 billion loan to stockpile critical minerals and protect manufacturers. Meanwhile, Europe's Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) aims to boost domestic extraction, heavily relying on new deposits like Sweden's Per Geijer. The race has also expanded into new frontiers, driving investments in African mining projects and Arctic reserves in Greenland. Simultaneously, the race is driving technological innovation, accelerating "urban mining" recycling efforts and the development of rare-earth-free magnets to permanently break global dependencies.
