Описание: Few alphabets have attracted so much attention, speculation and political misuse like the Nordic runes. But were they really more than a writing system? Unless, of course, you consider writing and reading itself as a kind of magic if you were living in the early Middle Ages, as also suggested by the famous myth about Odin sacrificing himself in order to gain knowledge. In this lecture, we will be exploring the historical sources in search of the meanings of the runes and actual magic spells written in runes, such as the Ribe skull fragment or the Sigtuna plates in an attempt to shed some light on this heated topic.
