ABOUT FORD FIVE HUNDRED
The Ford Five Hundred is the full-size sedan that was introduced around September 2004 for the model year 2005. It was built on the Ford D3 platform that shared with its twin, Mercury Montego and the Ford Freestyle crossover SUV, which replaced the Taurus wagon. It come with 3.0-liter Duratec V6 engine produced 203 horsepower, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission (for FWD) or a CVT transmission (for AWD). The Ford Five Hundred is one of the first American Ford vehicles to use a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Ford chose to continue its fourth generation Taurus, critical to the company's fleet sales, and overlap that production with the new sedan, using the Five Hundred nameplate and emphasizing its optional all-wheel drive and continuously variable transmission, extensive safety features and huge interior.
Due to the engine and conservative styling became points of criticism, and sales fell markedly short of company projections — requiring substantive discounts by its second model year. The Five Hundred had a redesigned for the year 2008 and it was changed its nameplate to Ford Taurus for the fifth generation.
THE REVIVAL OF THE TAURUS NAME
The fifth-generation Taurus entered production in 2007 as a 2008 model and was developed directly from the Ford Five Hundred, chiefly with a mild exterior facelift and revised engine and transmission. Ford designated the model as the Taurus, after the demise of the concurrently marketed fourth-generation Taurus and to take advantage of its customer recognition and dealer demand.
Changes for this Taurus from the original Ford Five Hundred included a newly styled front with three-bar horizontal grille design that already seen on other Ford vehicles, newly headlights, along with a raked front end and curved surfaces, attracted customers. The interior of the Taurus were largely carried over from the Five Hundred but with subtle differences. The centre stack housed an infotainment system called SYNC. The system featured user-friendly voice commands, easily understood in the quiet interior.
Under the hood, the Taurus available 3.5-liter Duratec V6, produced 263 horsepower. It was replaced the 203 horsepower, 3.0-liter Duratec V6 that used in the original Ford Five Hundred.
By changing the name from Ford Five Hundred to Taurus, it also affected to its counterpart. As its twin, the Mercury Montego was had a redesigned for the year 2008 and rebranded as Mercury Sable for reviving the name. While the Ford Freestyle, the crossover that used the same platform alongside them also renamed as Taurus X for the redesigned model.
