Filey, Yorkshire,Thursday, 1st October 1863.JAMES CAIRD, Esq., M.P. (Chairman). Professor HUXLEY, F.R.S.
In 1863, following concern amongst the fishing industry, Thomas Huxley, James Caird and G. Shaw-Lefevre were commissioned to gather testimony from around the UK, including Filey. The interviews on Thursday 1st October 1863 occurred on Hope Street, Filey.
Those interviewed included: Arthur Pettit, Benjamin Simpson, David Crawford, John Jenkinson (b.1791-d.1872), Edmund Crawford, William Jenkinson (b.1786- d.1865), Edward Scales (Baptised 26th Feb 1818 and had been fishing 20 or 30 years), William Cammish, Richard Pickering, and Gordon Douglas.
The outcome of the Commission was a report which perpetuated the mistaken view that the seas were an endless source of fish, and that regulation was not required. Overcoming the thinking of a less populated and less technologically advanced world is an ongoing issue for the natural history of the oceans.
