Описание: Our online series of Live & Ticking webinars keep you updated with the latest British Heart Foundation (BHF) funded science taking place across the UK.

In this final edition of Live & Ticking, we partner with MacMillan Cancer Support to discover how chemotherapy and some anti-cancer drugs can cause cardiotoxicity which can increase the risk of heart failure.

Event speakers:

Fearghal McKinney – Your host and Head of BHF Northern Ireland guides us through this special edition webinar by introducing some of the BHF-funded research and work of MacMillan Cancer Support linking the issues between cancer and the heart.

Dr María Sol Andrés – Cardiologist and Research Clinical Fellow at Royal Brompton Hospital, and Clinical Advisor and Specialist Reviewer for Macmillan Cancer Support, discusses her primary role in caring for cancer patients who develop cardiovascular disease during and after cancer treatment and leading innovative research projects in this field.

Philippa Coffey – Diagnosed with lymphoma in 2015 after experiencing extreme fatigue and completing eight courses of aggressive chemotherapy, Philippa talks about being further diagnosed a year later with heart failure and experiencing many side effects from the anti-cancer treatment.

Yianna Theodorou – BHF Senior Research Engagement Officer helps to navigate through Philippa’s story.

Laura Booth – BHF-funded researcher at University of Newcastle discusses how some anti-cancer drugs can cause heart cells to not function correctly and produce substances that “zombify” other cells, and how thorough ageing and following a heart attack, these cells cause heart dysfunction.

Priya Reehal – Lead Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in cardio-oncology and heart failure at Royal Brompton Hospital helps to answer viewers questions about cancer and the heart.
