President Donald Trump took a tour of "Alligator Alcatraz," an undocumented migrant facility located in the heart of the Florida Everglades, on Tuesday morning.
Just days later, crews were out hanging the signs for the facility, bearing the words Alligator Alcatraz.
The idea for this facility was proposed by Attorney General James Uthmeier on June 19 through a post on X, where he noted that it would be situated at an old, largely abandoned airport facility within the Everglades. On June 23, Uthmeier announced that the facility has been approved and will feature 5,000 beds.
“The location makes it very efficient and cost-effective,” Uthmeier stated, adding, “If someone tries to escape, the only thing waiting for them is alligators and pythons.”
