Clan Leslie hails from the Garioch in Aberdeenshire and traces its origins to the 11th-century Hungarian noble Bartolf, who escorted St Margaret to Scotland and was granted the lands of Leslie. The family adopted the motto “Grip Fast” after Bartolf famously saved King Malcolm III during a river crossing by urging the monarch to tighten his hold on the saddle girth. Over the centuries the Leslies rose to national prominence: Sir Andrew Leslie became Earl of Rothes in 1458; Field Marshal Alexander Leslie, 1st Earl of Leven, commanded Scottish Covenanter armies in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms; and Johan Leslie, Count of Leslie, earned fame in the Imperial service during the Thirty Years’ War. The clan fought at Bannockburn, Flodden, and on both sides of the Jacobite risings, reflecting its varied loyalties. Leslie castles—including the romantic ruins of Leslie Castle and the grand 17th-century Fyvie Castle—stand as reminders of their influence. Today the chief, the Earl of Rothes, presides over a worldwide diaspora that celebrates the distinctive Leslie tartan, the black griffin crest, and a heritage defined by martial skill, royal service, and steadfast loyalty.
