When launched in 1952, she was originally known as the SS Elton Hoyt II.
Built in Quincy Massachusetts by Massachusetts Heavy Industries, she was one of three ships brought up the Mississippi and Illinois rivers to the Great Lakes.
Due to her size, the cabins and pilot house were removed and placed on deck where they would be reassembled in Chicago prior to her launch on Lake Michigan.
In April of 2003, she was sold to the Canadian Company Lower Lakes Towing and was renamed after the Canadian River, Michipicoten.
The MIchipicoten River is adjacent to the park of the same name and is located at the eastern end of Lake Superior just south of Wawa Ontario.
Michipicoten means "big bluffs" when translated in the Ojibwe language.
During the 2010 layup, her original 7,700 horsepower Bethlehem Steel cross compound steam turbine and two oil fired Foster-Wheeler water tube boilers were replaced with a MaK 6M32C 6-cylinder 8,160 brake horsepower (6,080 kW) diesel engine along with a new pitch propeller.
The cost of the upgrade was around $15 million US dollars.
The 697' vessel is captured here on an overcast December day in Windsor Ontario at Southwestern Sales offloading granular.
