Civilian Officer Ambushed While Responding to a Burglary Call

On April 28, 2026, Fort Worth CRU Officer Edward Zapata responded to a burglary call on Juliet Lane when 39-year-old Angel Cantu, armed with a gun, opened fire from across the street. Officer Zapata was injured when shrapnel struck his left eye and called for assistance.

Responding officers arrived and exchanged gunfire with the suspect, who fled into his home before escaping through the back and jumping a fence. Police established a large perimeter and launched an extensive search. Several nearby schools were placed on lockdown, and residents were advised to stay indoors.

After nearly six hours on the run, Cantu was arrested near Riverside and Brittany Place as he emerged from a wooded area. Authorities recovered a weapon believed to have been used in the shooting.

Officer Zapata was hospitalized for his eye injury and has since been released, though he is expected to undergo additional surgery to remove remaining shrapnel from his eye.
