COVID-19: Boris to impose £5k fine for holidaymakers in major crackdown

Описание: Brits will face a £5,000 fine if they attempt to travel abroad on holiday from next Monday in a move aimed at cracking down on travellers. MPs will vote on legislation later this week which will bring into law the new fine for holidaymakers.

The government says they are concerned about people bringing coronavirus back to the UK which could lead to a renewed outbreak of the disease. There are also worries about travellers picking up new strains of COVID-19 which could be resistant to vaccines. However the move has faced criticism for being too draconian and further damaging the travel industry which has been devastated by repeated lockdowns.

The UK has seen a dramatic fall in the number of deaths and cases related to coronavirus in recent weeks, with just 17 deaths reported on Monday. However the EU has seen a rise in coronavirus cases and fatalities, with a potential third wave sweeping the continent. Ministers claim it is vital to keep the UK protected from a renewed outbreak through these tough measures on tourists.

Britain’s vaccination programme has seen over 50% of the adult population protected against COVID-19, compared to just 10% in the EU. Experts warn an influx of travellers from the continent could put the UK’s vaccine efforts at risk.

The earliest Brits will be able to travel for holidays will be 17th May, when the government reviews whether this is feasible. It is reported that it is likely holidaymakers will only be allowed abroad from July after the entire adult population is fully vaccinated. Steven Edginton
