ŚB 3.6.5-Transformation of Elements into Gigantic Universal Form
1)Lord’s Entry in His Plenary Portion (Mātrayā-By Portion)
verse uses words pareṇa viśatā &mātrayā, indicating that Lord entered elements by His own plenary portion, not with His full expansion of all energies. He entered elements of creation (viśva-sṛg-gaṇaḥ), which are twenty-three elements responsible for universal manifestation.
First, elements existed separately &were unable to combine into functioning universe. Previously it was explained that Lord had already entered through His external energy to combine elements &then He entered personally in His plenary aspect as Paramātmā. After this divine entry, elements obtained mutual interaction (anyonyam āsādya) &became transformed (cukṣobha), meaning they underwent transformation into gross universal form.
This transformation resulted in manifestation of universe in which all lokas &all moving &non-moving beings (cara &acara) are situated.
2)Meaning of Viśva-sṛg-gaṇaḥ-Elements of Creation
term viśva-sṛg-gaṇaḥ refers to collective group of elements that generate universe, such as mahat-tattva &other fundamental elements. These elements alone could not produce universe independently. They were inert &unorganized until spiritually energized.
When Lord entered them even by slight portion of His potency, they received ability to combine &transform into gross universe that accommodates all planetary systems &all forms of life.
3)Matter Cannot Expand Without Spiritual Touch
Elements of cosmic creation are material &have no inherent power to increase, expand, or organize themselves unless entered by Lord. Matter does not increase or decrease independently; it functions only when spiritually activated.
Matter is product of spirit Without spiritual consciousness, matter remains inactive.
•As long as spiritual consciousness is present in body, body grows.
•When body becomes dead &spiritual consciousness is absent, growth stops immediately.
Similarly, universal body increased in form only because of Lord’s spiritual presence within it. importance is not of matter but of spiritual consciousness, as emphasized in teachings of Bhagavad-gītā.
4)Universal Form Is Not Produced by Individual Soul
virāṭ-rūpa is called “virāṭ” because Supreme Lord is present within it in His plenary portion.
This establishes that behind creation there is conscious Supreme Person. Creation does not arise merely from matter; rather, Lord uses material ingredients to create.
ŚB 3.6.6-Residence of Hiraṇmaya Puruṣa in Universe
1)Identity of Hiraṇmaya Puruṣa
Hiraṇmaya Puruṣa refers to Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, incarnation of Lord who enters each universe. Although virāṭ conception is material, Lord who enters universe as Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu is fully spiritual. universal form is conception of His cosmic manifestation, but He Himself is transcendental ®ulator of universe.
Lord expands Himself:
•As Mahā-Viṣṇu, who creates innumerable universes
•As Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, who enters each universe
•As Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, who enters every atom &heart
So, virāṭ conception &Viṣṇu’s presence are described interchangeably from perspective of cosmic manifestation.
2)Universe Filled Half with Water
After Lord entered each universe as Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, half of universe became filled with water (garbha water). visible cosmic manifestation—planets, outer space &all observable structures—is only one half of complete universe. Lord resides upon this cosmic water within universal egg (āṇḍa-kośa).
water itself originates from Lord &He lies upon it within universe before further creation unfolds.
3)Period of One Thousand Celestial Years Before Manifest Creation
verse states that Lord resided for one thousand celestial years in water of universe. This duration is not ordinary human years but celestial years, indicating immense period between Lord’s entry into universe &birth of Brahmā.
During this period:
•Creation is not yet manifest.
•Brahmā has not yet appeared.
•living entities remain in dormant state.
4)Condition of Living Entities Before Creation
purport &lecture explain that all living entities lie with Lord within universe in unmanifest, dormant condition until Brahmā is born. These are conditioned souls whose karma &desires exist, but they have not yet received material bodies.
They can be understood as being in dormant or “sleeping” state, without active bodies or senses. They are present within Lord in womb of mahat-tattva &are later distributed throughout universe at time of creation.
Before universal manifestation:
•souls remain without bodies.
•They do not perform activities.
•They await beginning of creation.
5)Lotus Origin of Further Creation
From navel of Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu arises lotus upon which Brahmā appears. Within that lotus structure exist various planetary systems. lower portion of universe remains filled with water, while manifested planetary systems develop afterward through Brahmā’s secondary creation
