For many years cryptography was only used by state-actors for war. Crypto was off-limits to the public because it was a state secret. It wasn't until the 1970s that cryptography was available to the public, but the public was still trying to figure out the internet, and they didn't know how to use cryptographic technology. Big companies picked up the mantel of cryptography out of necessity, not out of a desire to build an encryption company. Blockchain and crypto are finally putting the responsibility back int the hands of the individual.

Crypto gives people the ability to express consent on the internet as easily as they use cash. We no longer have a need for “what is your mother’s maiden name” or “what is your dog’s name?” The revolution of cryptography is the trickle-down of encryption moving from the state level to the corporation to the individual, and this is a good thing.

When people become responsible for their own data, big companies no longer need to invest billions of dollars securing people's "dog's names."
