In March 2019, Estski embarked on a backcountry skiing expedition in Nunatsiavut, an Inuit-owned region in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The journey explored Fraser Canyon and the Kiglapait Mountains near Nain—remote, untouched terrain where locals had never seen skiers before. These descents may have been the first ever recorded in these areas.
Fraser Canyon, one of North America’s most striking canyons, offers extreme skiing conditions with steep ravines and rugged landscapes. The Kiglapait Mountains, with peaks exceeding 600m in vertical drop, provided world-class slopes. To tackle these challenges, we set up a self-sustaining base camp and fully immersed ourselves in the environment.
Beyond the adventure, this expedition embraced Inuit culture—living within the community, working with local stakeholders, and integrating Indigenous knowledge.
