Today, we begin with HDFC Bank. A major development has shaken the market as the bank’s part-time Chairman, Atanu Chakraborty, resigned on March 18 with immediate effect. The reason he gave is surprising—he pointed to “internal practices” within the bank that did not align with his personal values and ethics. However, he did not share specific details. The bank clarified that there is no “material reason” behind the resignation. Meanwhile, the RBI stated that HDFC Bank remains financially strong, with no governance concerns.
But the impact was visible beyond the bank. The stock market saw a sharp fall, wiping out nearly ₹7 lakh crore of investor wealth. Sensex and Nifty both dropped significantly.
