Trailer watch: Viswasam promises good dose of Ajith

This Pongal, Ajith Kumar fans are awaiting a treat. The trailer for Viswasam, which was released on Sunday, shows Ajith playing a don. Clad in his signature veshti and shirt, his catchphrase seems to be 'Adichu thookkalaama?', resonating from the song 'Adchithooku', the first single from this film.

Nayanthara is paired with Ajith, after having played the lead in a series of women-centric movies this year. The ‘Lady Superstar’, as she is known in Kollywood, has delivered back-to-back hits. The two are playing the lead roles for the fourth time after Billa (2007), Aegan (2008) and Aarrambam (2013).

Farming, violence, and family seem to be the themes of the film directed by Siva, going by the trailer. Rajinikanth's Petta is also slated for a Pongal release. This year we saw a bunch of big budget films releasing on the same day or close to each other.

The cast includes Sampath as the villain, Vivek, Thilak Ramesh, Thambi Ramaiah, Yogi Babu, Robo Sankar and Kovai Sarala. Slated to release on January 10, 2019, the film is certified 'U' by CBFC. The first look was released in August 2018 and the motion poster was out in November 2018. Produced by T.G. Thyagarajan of Sathya Jyothi Films, the music is by D. Imman.

Petta (lit. Hood) is an upcoming 2019 Tamil-language action film written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj and produced by Kalanithi Maran under his production studio Sun Pictures. The film stars Rajinikanth with an ensemble cast including Vijay Sethupathi, Simran, Trisha, M. Sasikumar, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Bobby Simha, J. Mahendran and Guru Somasundaram.

Viswasam (lit. Loyalty) is an upcoming 2019 Indian Tamil language action film written and directed by Siva. The film features Ajith Kumar and Nayanthara in lead roles. Produced by Sathya Jyothi Films, the film was officially announced on November 20, 2017 and principal photography began in May 2018. The film is scheduled to release on Pongal 2019. The first look of the film was released on 23 August 2018.

The GO not coming through just a day before the film’s release is as a dampener for many fans. But this charade is quite common before the release of any big star films, says a box office tracker from the industry.

“This has happened for Vijay films in the past. The order might eventually come through but theatres invariably plan for such special shows based on fan pressure. Festival days can have 5 shows and so even if the order were to come tomorrow, the theatres can have special shows on Day 2 given that it is Pongal holidays. But if you look at the scene in Andhra, for the NTR biopic, the government has allowed 5.00 am special shows,” he adds.

Tirupur Subramanium, who handles distribution and exhibition in Coimbatore circle, tells us that most of the theatres will play both Viswasam and Petta in the Coimbatore circle. “They will split the shows 50-50 between their screens, if they play two shows for Petta, they’ll play two shows for Viswasam,” he says.

Viswasam and Petta will be the biggest box office clash in Tamil Cinema in a long time. Box office trackers had opined that the films will eat into each other’s collection.
