This is the second episode in our series on scalable modeling with Simo Roikonen and Jose Hidalgo. We explore how scalable modeling helps create systems that grow without rewrites, stay resilient, and adapt as the domain changes.
To ground the ideas, we walk through a practical example: digitalizing Santa’s wish management system. We start by looking at the reasons behind the problem, such as the huge volume of wishes, the pressure on the elves, and the waste caused by changing or unclear wishes. From there, we map the problem space through event storming and identify important moments in the flow, including wish received and present delivered.
We then introduce core ideas like policies, shared language, and states built from events. After that, we shift from a timeline view to a structural view and show how commands, policies, states, queries, and events connect to form a system that can scale across distributed components.
The episode ends with a short demonstration of how this model supports rapid experimentation and testing using the given when then style of behavior driven development.
